Pioneer is a company
with headquarters in Kawasaki, Kanagawa in Japan. The company
produces digital entertainment products. It was founded in the year
1938 as a speaker and radio repair shop in Tokyo, Japan. Susumu
Kotani is the current president for Pioneer.
Pioneer was one of the
developers of the laser disc player, interactive cable television,
the first CD players for the automotive industry, DVDs, plasma
displays, and OLED. Pioneer also works with display and optical disc
technology as well as many software products.
In the year 2007, Sharp
Corporation purchased a 14% stake in the company. Since then the
Sharp shares have been reduced to just 9%, but Sharp is still the
largest shareholder of the corporation.
In February of 2009 the
company announced that it would stop production of televisions, which
it did in during the following year. The company sold their home
electronics division to Onkyo in September of 2014. Pioneer is most
known for selling car electronics.
